A West Berbice farmer is now recuperating from injuries to his right arm after an intense battle with a large caiman over the weekend
Mahadeo Narine, 59, of Plantation Ross, West Coast Berbice, recalled that he had started his day in normal fashion, and had gone to the edge of a nearby trench to wash a trough used by his ducks. It was around seven in the morning, and he was leaning over the edge of the stream when there was a swift and sudden attack by a “big black alligator.”
According to Mr. Narine, the reptile, which he averaged was about ten to twelve feet in length, with one swift movement, got hold of his right arm, pulled him into the water, and went into a characteristic roll. Narine however countered the manoeuvre by using his left hand, which was free, to place the reptile in a head lock, and squeezed as hard as he could, and at the same time shouted for help.
Mr. Narine recalled that while the reptile had a firm grip on his arm, he was determined not to allow it to be able go into the death–roll, and so there was a struggle which lasted for several minutes before the reptile released his arm. Mahadeo in turn released his grip and the reptile made good its escape leaving the farmer with a mangled limb.
Mahadeo received initial treatment at the Mahaicony Hospital, and was immediately transferred to the Georgetown Hospital where he had to undergo surgery. Now at home recuperating, the injured man has commended the staff at the Mahaicony Hospital in particular for the prompt and professional treatment he received.
