DEAR EDITOR,
The overt and continuous aggression by Venezuela requires all Guyanese to be united against President Maduro, who appears to be seeking the title of the continental neighbourhood bully intruding in the internal affairs of Guyana. The time is now for every Guyanese to do his bit for this land. Politics, political ambition or bruised political ego must not hinder the call to do what we have to do for country.
When faced with external aggression, all Guyanese are expected to demonstrate the highest level of patriotism and rally against the forces of greed and evil which threaten our geographical and global displacement as well as our peace and progress as a nation. There should be no PPP Guyana or coalition Guyana; no divisions, only common purpose to foil the shock of rude invaders who seek to violate our sovereignty.
The history of the Venezuelan aggression is one that has seen this nation united on previous occasions. It is the only right and imaginable thing to do. The PNCR, as the other major political force now merged with the AFC and other partners, has traditionally given unquestionable support of the PPP government when it comes to safeguarding Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Hence it is with astonishment that this post-Cheddi Jagan PPP now in opposition and best represented politically by the misguided anti-national leadership of Bharrat Jagdeo finds it worthy to use Maduro’s attack on the Guyana government as fuel for political mileage, as posted on the PPP’s facebook with pride.
Maduro’s recent statement that, “President Granger is not ruling Guyana. Right now there are major floods in Guyana and he walks the world against Venezuela. I feel sorry for the people of Guyana who is our brother” at the Mercosur Summit, is an effort to insult Guyanese, fuel discontent and pander to opposition politics.
His statement and the PPP’s support to same, convey the impression that there is a forged alliance of evil between the current Venezuelan regime and the Jagdeo-led PPP. This is unfortunate. Individually and collectively these forces are out to destroy Guyana and have found common ground upon which to unleash their forces of destruction and greed.
The hypocrisy of President Maduro’s politics – feigning brotherhood concern for Guyanese – must remind all Guyanese of the vicious mean hungry wolf who sought to devour Red Riding Hood in the famous fairy tale. The fabled wolf is cunning in his attempt to assume the identity of an innocent child’s grandmother while seeking to do her harm.
President Maduro is no brother of Guyana. Brothers do not seek to covet, rob and steal their siblings’ property, threaten them harm and deny them opportunities for development. Such is the characteristic of a vicious mean wolf in disguise and it is timely to be reminded of the happily ever after ending for Red Riding Hood.
Similarly, Guyanese brothers acting as internal enemies who cannot recognise that there is a time and place for everything under this sun, and that the time is now for national unity, are demonstrating the highest level of betrayal and lack of patriotism that must be condemned by all and exorcised from Guyanese brotherhood as unworthy, as well as a threat to peace and stability. Internal disputes by political rivals do not justify siding with and soliciting the support of external enemies.
These are the beginning signs of setting the environment for domestic terrorism and fostering of treasonous activities against the state of Guyana that all Guyanese must confront and condemn without hesitation.
President Maduro, instead of focusing on floods in Guyana, should try settling the internal hunger of his people for good governance and economic progress that would see an end to food lines and the current chaos in his country where he is not too loved by the people.
