Dear Sports Editor,
There has been no official press release in the local media by either the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Or the WICB in relation to the WICB Town Hall Meeting to be held at the Georgetown Cricket Club on Wednesday 22nd July, 2015. This meeting for which there is no agenda, appears to be a closely-guarded secret to be attended by only a few carefully chosen persons although the intent of a Town Hall Meeting is to have the participation of all stakeholders and members of the public. Also we note that the date of this meeting had misleading information, that is, Tuesday 22nd July, 2015.
We the constituent members of Guyana Cricket view this development as yet another deliberate ploy by the executive members of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) to maintain its stranglehold of our national game despite the effort of the constituent members to bring order, decency and accountability at all levels of cricket in Guyana.
We wish to query whether the Government of Guyana, Caricom Secretariat, the Private Sector Commission, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the National Sports Commission, the Political Opposition and the many other major stakeholders of Guyana Cricket have been invited to this meeting. This meeting should be held appropriately at a spacious public venue rather than at a private member’s club (GCC). Of equal importance, we wish to be advised whether the press has been invited to this meeting in order to provide a detailed report to the public.
We have many times before recorded our extreme disquiet regarding the continuous refusal of the WICB to meet with all constituent members of Guyana Cricket instead of, in a self-serving manner, deal only with a few persons in the executive membership of the GCB. In this regard, the WICB has been complicit in the shenanigans of the GCB.
With the prolonged crisis in Guyana’s Cricket, it is incumbent on the WICB to ensure that there is legality and accountability of its Member Boards in accordance with the rules of the ICC.
We expect that any purposeful cricket meeting the WICB proposes to hold in Guyana should be open to all stakeholders, should be comprehensive, objective and analytical, and should have an all-inclusive approach and commitment to resolve the staggering problems in Guyana Cricket.
