Dear Sports Desk,
I am seeking your intervention in a matter that is of great importance to me and my colleagues.
I am an official of the Athletics Association of Guyana. Sadly to say the manner in which our officials are treated leaves much to be desired.
Firstly one must remember that these officials volunteer their services to ensure the smooth running of track and field in this country and as such respect is due to them. So one asks the question, what is the President of the Athletics Association of Guyana doing to bring respect to this group of people, who we must remember, are mostly adults who sacrifice their time and in some cases commit themselves to this organization.
It is sad to say that as an official we are not even given proper food, adequate drinking water, and the money we use for traveling we are not reimbursed on time.
Because of the manner in which the President threats us the athletes now feel free to do the same.
In 2012 at a well attended three days track meet an official got sick shortly after eating the lunch provided (that official was subsequently treated for food poisoning).
Officials travel from as far as Linden and Berbice to ensure the smooth running of games and should be properly compensated and provided for.
I can’t pay $4,000 to travel from Linden to GT for a two days meet and be given $2,000, because I am volunteering my services but a member of the Executive Body traveling from the same location gets back the full amount.
We are tired of this seemingly lazy, selfish, disrespectful attitude of the President of the AAG who do not even have the decency to find out how we manage at these meets.
We don’t have jerseys. We look worn from the over used jerseys that we have been wearing thanks to the Guyana Teachers Union. We are tired of the being told to get to point of meet for a 10am start only to get there and the President of the AAG is still to get there to issue officials with materials needed for the meet.
Show us the respect that is required of us, we are human, we sacrifice our time, families and in some cases even put our jobs on the burner for the AAG but all we get is disrespectful treatment.
Late and cold tasteless food, hot water to drink on a very hot day and then to add insult to injury we have to beg officials with their own transportation to give us a drop as was the case last Friday night (2 Fridays ago) after a certain track meet held at the New track when officials after waiting over 1 hour for their reimbursement were told they have to wait until next week.
Imagine our embarrassment, but thanks to officials with transportation we were able to get back to Georgetown.
Enough is enough Mr AAG President this is not your club, this nonsense MUST STOP.
Concerned Official.
