– get no response from Dr. Bheri Ramsarran to provide statement
Former Health Minister Dr. Bheri Ramsaran is likely to know soon whether he will be charged for telling female activist, Sherlina Nageer, that he could “slap her for the fun of it,” and have her stripped.
A senior police official disclosed yesterday that police have completed their investigations into complaints that Ms. Nageer filed almost three months ago against Dr. Ramsaran. A report is to be sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) today.
The official also disclosed that a detective returned to Whim, Berbice, where the confrontation between Nageer and the former Health Minister had occurred. Police also made attempts to contact Leon Suseran who was present when the alleged threats were made.
A senior police official disclosed last week that police recently contacted Dr. Ramsaran about the allegations against him, and the former health Minister had promised to submit a statement to investigators. However, the official said yesterday that Ramsaran has not submitted the statement.
It is only in recent days that police have appeared to be pursuing the investigation against Ramsaran, who was forced to step down as Health Minister, following a wave of protests.
Prior to this, “we are still investigating,” was all former Crime Chief Leslie James would say about the state of the probe.
James had also declined to say what has been preventing them from completing what appeared to be a simple investigation, even after Nageer had submitted a statement and a recording of the incident.
It was on April 20, last, that Dr. Ramsaran was recorded outside the Whim Magistrate’s Court telling Nageer to “F off”, and referring to her as a “little piece of s**t.” He was also recorded saying that he would have her “slapped for the fun of it,” and saying he could “have some of my women strip her.”
Dr. Ramsaran was Health Minister at the time, and the activist had queried his presence outside the Whim Magistrate’s Court with other PPP supporters, after former President Bharrat Jagdeo was charged for allegedly making racially divisive statements at Babu Jaan, Corentyne.
Even after issuing an apology, Dr. Ramsaran was later recorded labeling Nageer as a “miscreant,” and saying that she was in need of “psychiatric help.”
He was roundly condemned for his statements and the outburst eventually led to former President Donald Ramotar relieving Dr. Ramsaran of his Ministerial duties.
