Businessman, Leonard Singh, was yesterday acquitted of rape, after he was found not guilty of the offence by a twelve-member mixed jury. Singh had faced an in camera trial for the offence before Justice Dawn Gregory.
He had been charged with two counts of rape of a girl under sixteen. The businessman was represented by Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes and the matter was presented by State Prosecutors Michael Shahoud and Orinthia Schmidt.
According to the allegation, Singh had sexual intercourse with the Virtual Complainant (VC), on December 6 and December 9, 2010. The accused was 22 years old at the time.
The virtual complainant, (VC) who was just 14 years old, was reportedly at school, when the perpetrator, (whom she later identified as Singh) picked her up in his vehicle and took her to a hotel in Kitty, where they had sexual intercourse.
The teen’s mother subsequently questioned her about her whereabouts and she confessed that she had been sexually involved with Singh. The matter was then reported to the police and the businessman was charged for rape. Five witnesses testified in the matter, including the victim’s mother and a police officer, who tendered a medical report on behalf of the VC.
During the trial Singh, denied that the incident ever took place. He instead claimed that the girl’s mother fabricated the story against him because she wanted money from him.
Following the announcement of the Jury yesterday, Singh exited the courtroom with a smile on his face. He embraced a relative, who was standing on the corridor. However, the victim’s mother, who was also present at the hearing, fled the courtroom in tears.
