An Enmore man was added to the country’s road fatality list when he was struck down by a motor vehicle on the Foulis Public Road, around 02:00 hours yesterday.
Thirty eight year old Satwergeet Roopchand of Lot 49 Enmore Logwood, Enmore, East Coast Demerara was attempting to cross the Foulis Railway Embankment when the incident occurred.
A police release said that their investigations have revealed that Saturjeet Roopchand allegedly rode out of an access road onto the main roadway and was struck down by a motor vehicle. He was pronounced dead 0n arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
But a man who claimed to be an eyewitness gave this newspaper a different version from what the police said transpired.
He said that around 1:57 hrs, the man was standing alongside the Foulis Railway Embankment, waiting to cross, when the car struck him from the side.
Another eyewitness told Kaieteur News that Roopchand was waiting to cross the road when the car swerved and hit him, “pelting he up in di air, and when this man reach down back he head di buss up and a set of blood started to run like water, “the woman stated.
A close relative said that Roopchand landed several feet from where he was struck and the blood that was on the road came out in chunks.
This publication was also made to understand that the driver of the car offered assistance.
According to Roopchand’s sister, a breathalyzer test conducted by the police revealed that the driver of the car was not under the influence of alcohol.
However she admitted that her brother was drinking on Saturday evening.
The dead man sister told this publication that her brother was at a shop having some wine before proceeding home. She also stated that a, “bus driver come by me and ask me if ‘Lil Boy’ is my brother, and that h0w he just get knock down and he dead.”
She said that according to the information she received, Roopchand was at the northern side of the road when the speeding car PNN 2045 struck him down.
The woman said that upon receiving the news about her brother’s death, she and her husband went to the scene and were informed by some villagers that the man was lying on the road for several minutes before he was picked up and placed in the back seat of the car that hit him.
Roopchand’s sister told Kaieteur News that she and her husband decided to take him out of the car and placed him in their vehicle and eventually took him to the hospital, although he appeared dead already.
Upon arrival to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) Satwergeet Roopchand was officially pronounced dead.
When this newspaper arrived at the family’s house, Roopchand’s mother explained that her son is the bread winner of the home and they have been living together for some years now, since he and his wife divorced.
“Meh nah know wah fah do now that me son gone!” the mother cried.
The police said that driver of the car is in custody assisting with investigations.
