One day after the government disbanded the controversial Berbice Anti Smuggling Squad (BASS) the police in Berbice have upped the ante against smugglers in the Berbice area.
Police in Berbice nabbed a Surinamese national who was trying to leave the country on Saturday via the back track route.
The man who resides at Timmers Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam was about to board a boat at the No79 back track landing when he was nabbed by police.
Information revealed that the police acting on information went to the area around 07:30 hrs and saw the individual acting in a suspicious manner. He was challenged and taken into custody. While in custody the police searched him and found a parcel containing what was suspected to be leaves, seeds and stems of the marijuana plant.
The suspect and the find were taken into custody where the contents were tested and checked and found to be 8KG of marijuana. Investigations are ongoing and charges are likely shortly.
