– Sessions slated to start today
The overseas based (England, Canada, USA) Lady Jags arrived in Guyana yesterday to commence a one week camp aimed at further preparing the flagship team for next month’s Caribbean Football Union Olympic Qualifying competition.
Kaieteur Sport caught up with the players just after they had lunch yesterday at the team hotel in the City. Justin Rodrigues who was with the team when they competed at the CONCACAF Female Gold Cup Finals in Cancun, Mexico in 2010 said it was great to be back and they {players} are all excited to see each other again.
“It’s good to reunite and make our country proud once again so we’re excited to be here.” Rodrigues also shared her thoughts on what they would do different as they seek to qualify for next year’s Olympics in Brazil.
“Just making sure we are one step ahead of the opponent, we want to make sure we are more in shape, we’re training that much harder; we’re doing lots of team bonding making sure we’re all as a team and coaches in sync and hopefully this time around, having the skill ensure we push that extra mile to ensure we get into the next round.”
Another player, Donna Joseph explained that the majority of players have experience from the last sojourn and they know what to expect.
“This time we don’t have the same jitters; we can be more confident and trust each other, the programme and the coaches to do better this time around.”
Kayla DeSouza noted that all the players back in the programme are more experienced since it was five years ago they were battling for the Lady Jags. She said they will be passing on some of the knowledge to the players who were even younger than them then, who are now in the programme.
The trio said they are hoping that all and sundry would have trust and confidence in them as they seek keep the Golden Arrowhead aloft. (Franklin Wilson)
