Thirteen members from the Shotokan Karate-Do of Guyana (SHOKOGUY) returned from USA after successfully attending the 49th Master Camp & International Goodwill Tournament hosted by the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) and held at Camp Green Lane, Pennsylvania, June 12 -19.
The team comprised of Chief Instructor – Sensei Christopher Chaves, Sensei Marvin Singh, Rudolph Dyal, Pamela Das and nine children namely; Loren Black, Timothy Chand, Mikhail Da Costa, Arron Austin, Kamani Murphy, Reyad Yassin, Jared Yassin, Akeem Morgan and Aashish Dyal.
Speaking exclusively with this newspaper, the team’s management stated that the experience was humbling and they all felt privileged to be exposed to training conducted by high ranking guest Masters who are world renowned.
These included 9th Dan–Master Yutaka Yuguchi of the USA, Master Masaru Miura from Europe, and Master Shunsake Takahashi from Japan, along with several other 7th and 8th Dan Instructors. ISKF founder and Chief Instructor – Master Teruyuki Okazaki 10th Dan was present and conducted sessions also.
The camp attracted in excess of 400 Karatekas who represented over 40 countries. During the Camp, the International Board of Directors met and head representative for ISKF Guyana Sensei Chaves attended.
Training sessions were held six hours daily in the morning and afternoons. Teaching seminars and lectures were also a feature of the camp that sought to address and cover several personal developmental and building skills. Instructor’s seminars were also held.
The children’s competition saw the competitors being placed into groups – Kata and Kumite. This format promoted unity and friendship among the participating countries. In the end, all participants were awarded medals for their efforts.
In the adult category, competition was fierce and Guyana performed well to the extent of being successful in the Male Brown Belt Division with Rudolph Dyal attaining first place in both Kata and Kumite by defeating Juan Rubiera of Spain, while in the female beginner’s division Pamela Das placed 3rd in both Kata and Kumite.
That division was won by Teona Tkebuchava from the state of Georgia. At the awards ceremony, Brazil was rewarded for being the best supportive country. However, the Brazilian team felt Guyana was most deserving of this accolade, thus, graciously representing the said award to Guyana for what they considered excellent camaraderie, participation and a superb first impression.
SHOKOGUY Chief Instructor Sensei Christopher Chaves expressed pleasure with the performances of his charges whilst conveying the organization’s appreciation to all the parents, sponsors, members and the Ministry of Education for assisting them in realizing their attendance and participation at this years’ event. Chaves noted that they are anticipating a much larger contingent for 2016.
Notable upcoming plans for ISKF include the hosting of the Shoto Cup World Tournament schedule for Cape Town, South Africa, August 20 – 21, 2016. Also in 2016, the Master Camp is anticipated to be mega as it will commensurate with ISKF’s 50th anniversary celebrations. This is slated to be held in June 10 – 17.
