The Mayor and Councillors of the City, (M&CC) of Georgetown has advised that all religious and non-governmental organizations are liable for the exemption of taxes and can therefore apply for such.
Information disseminated by M&CC Customer Care Office yesterday, noted that the Council is authorized to grant exemption of taxes to such organizations. Section 211 of the Municipal and District Council Act 28:01state, no rates shall be levied in respect of the following properties: “Property used solely for the purpose of public religious worship, property used exclusively for the purpose of education, property used for the purpose of a burial ground cemetery or crematorium,” the statement outlined
Additionally, the Council is urging citizens, who have not paid their property taxes do so urgently; since payment of property taxes will assist the Council to provide the critical services needed in the City.
The Council therefore sought to remind citizens that Section 213 of the Municipal and District Council Act 28:01, states that: rates due in respect of a general rate shall be payable in four equal instalments which shall become due on the first day of February or on the day of service of the demand note, whichever day is later, the first day of April, the first day July and the first day of October.
“Further, if citizens are experiencing financial difficulties they can make use of the payment plan offered by the Council to settle their arrears.”
