Carl Hooper, the elegant former Guyana and West Indies batsman and now Head Coach of the Guyana Amazon Warriors told the Media yesterday ahead of tonight’s Hero CPL T20 clash with the St Lucia Zouks that the conditions at the Providence will influence team selection.
The 48-year-old Hooper with 102 Tests and 227 ODIs to his name, explained that the pitches in Guyana are low and slow and offer turn for the spinners which will result in a different bowling attack being assembled for tonight’s must win game.
“We played three fast bowlers in Jamaica because the deck there was quicker and had more bounce than the ones here so that and the opposition we will come up against tomorrow (Today) will dictate who we pick for the game,” Hooper, who has 13 Test and 7 ODI tons, disclosed.
Bishoo did not play in Jamaica but fans could see all three specialist spinners in the squad playing tonight. Hooper informed that there are no injury worries in the Amazon’s camp.
Skipper Denish Ramdin said team spirit was high among the players despite Wednesday’s washed out match in which the Warriors had to share the two points with the Jamaica Tallawahs.
“We are disappointed that we did not have the chance to get two important points for that game but there is nothing we could do about things we can’t control, but we can plan for future games,” said the 30-year-old Trinidadian Ramdin.
Ramdin reminded that tonight’s game is a crucial one for the Warriors since they need to get the two from the Zouks, who play their last match and are on nine points while the Guyana Franchise sit on seven points but have three games, including tonight’s match, to play.
“We are confident of doing well here since we have always done well at Providence. St Lucia Zouks beat us in St Lucia in the first round but this is a different pitch and we have selected different batsmen from that game” the West Indies Test Captain disclosed.
Ramdin said he felt for the large crowd which turned up in rain to support their team and was very impressed with how fast the ground, which was under water at 17:00hrs, dried out within 15 minutes later but the persistent rain resulted in the game being abandoned.
