A National Commemoration Commission will be set up by the government to oversee the organisation of next year’s 50th Independence anniversary celebrations.
This was revealed by Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman, at the administration’s post-cabinet briefing at the Ministry of the Presidency.
According to Minister Trotman, the Commission will not only be responsible for the upcoming Independence celebrations, but will also coordinate other national events. He noted that Mashramani coordination and planning will fall under the Commission; however he added that the 2016 festival will not be as prominent as previous years.
“We will have Mashramani celebrations, but I believe that it has already been announced that Mashramani will not be as showcased and highlighted, because we want to have more of an effort put into the May activities,” said the Minister.
The Governance Minister added that the Commission is in the process of appointing its members and is yet to announce the location of its secretariat and the “vision of the committee”.
The administration had previously come under criticism for its organisation of the ceremonial inauguration of President David Granger, which was blamed for the miles-long traffic build-up along the East Bank Demerara Public Road.
Minister Trotman assured that such an incident would not be repeated as the administration has more time to prepare for the May 26 commemoration.
“Bearing in mind that the inauguration was just a few days after the swearing-in, and of course there would have been some hiccups. We have almost a year in advance to plan and we are doing so.”
Moreover, Education Minister Dr Rupert Roopnarine, who also proposed the organising committee, will be in charge of the Commission along with the Minister within the Ministry, Nicolette Henry.
In addition to the Education Ministry, the Commission will also be cooperating with various bodies in the field of culture and sport as well as other Ministries and organisations to ensure that it is a “multifaceted commission”.
