Nearly a year after businessman Ashook Ragghu was shot and killed by armed bandits, two men were yesterday committed to stand trial in the High Court for his murder.
Jermaine Otto, 25, of Lot 735 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme and Travis McDougall, of East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, will go on trial at the next sitting of the Demerara Assizes in Georgetown.
Magistrate Ann McLennan found that a prima facie case was made out against the accused at the conclusion of a Preliminary Inquiry (PI).
The charge facing Otto and McDougall alleged that on August 18, 2014 at Vlissengen Road, they murdered Ragghu during the course of a robbery and relieved him of a bag containing $4 million.
According to reports, on the day in question, 13:00hrs, the deceased and his wife were in motor car PGG 8291 driving along Vlissengen Road, when they stopped at the traffic light at the intersection of Vlissengen and Regent Roads. Subsequently, the alleged bandits – Otto and his accomplice, McDougall – rode up on a Honda CG motorcycle and shot the businessman to his chest and relieved him of a haversack containing $4m.
The dead man’s wife, Shyrazadi Ragghu was shot in her thigh during the robbery.
The men then escaped on their motorcycle with the moneybag. Mr. Ragghu was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
During the trial the court was informed by the prosecution that McDougall was positively identified at the Brickdam Police Station by Shyrazadi Ragghu, as one of the bandits who attacked her and her husband.
