Public Relations Officer of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council, (M&CC) Royston King, was yesterday appointed to the position of Town Clerk.
King’s appointment came after Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan approved recommendations made by the council at their last statutory meeting, held on Monday.
King, who had worked in different capacities at City Hall, was tipped for the position after acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba was sent on administrative leave, pending an investigation into alleged misappropriation of funds, and subsequently dismissed.
The appointment letter, circulated yesterday outlined that the Ministry has approved the recommendation proffered and has no objection in appointing King to be Town Clerk of the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown.
King, a former Lecturer of the University of Guyana, was initially employed by the council as an Environmental Health Officer of the Public Health Department. He was later appointed as the City’s Public Relations Officer.
Back in 2011, with more than 25 years of service within the Council, he decided to apply for the position of Town Clerk.
King applied at least three times for the position. However despite the council’s approval, legal and political issues prevented him from taking up the job.
Following his official appointment yesterday, the Mayor, Councillors and staff of the M&CC congratulated King on his new and challenging venture.
