As part of its resuscitation drive, Castrol Strikers Volleyball Club, one of Guyana’s premier clubs recently embarked on a developmental plan with the intention of placing its male, female and youth teams at the helm of the sport locally.
Since its revival early this year, the once very vibrant club which now boasts a blend of youthful exuberance and mature stewardship has wasted no time in making clear its objective of functioning at an optimum level of discipline and organization.
Having already made amendments to its constitution to reflect its seriousness and drive, the club has also placed confidence in their most senior member Ian Wills, who apart from being the Head Coach, was elected as President.
The former national player was chosen to lead an executive body that includes the likes of former U-19 national captain Jamal Duncan, who will serve as his deputy, former female national players Candacy Deane -Treasurer, Natasha Gomes – Assistant Secretary / Treasurer and Samantha Hermanstine – Committee Member.
The other members that comprise the Body are- Melissa Tucker – Secretary, Tamika King – committee member and Chairman of the Public Relations Committee and Lerone Souvenir – Committee Member.
Under its new drive, the club has launched a recruitment programme in addition to other strategies intended to attract youths. Wills speaking with this newspaper via telephone yesterday disclosed that the club intends to host a national senior club tournament which will run simultaneously with a schools competition.
According to him, such a set up will allow school teams the opportunity to view volleyball at the highest level locally and hopefully stimulate their interest in the sport; a feature which has been absent for some time and identified as one of the primary reasons for the slump in volleyball activities for a few years now, especially in the Demerara county.
Now boasting a membership of in excess of 30 males and females, the club has also redesigned its coaching programme to cater for players at all levels so that it can facilitate what it expects to be an influx of persons who need to be taught the game from a beginners level.
Currently, Castrol trains at the National Gymnasium on Mandella Avenue on Tuesdays from 19:00-22:00hrs; Saturday’s 19:30-21:00 hrs and Sundays from 14:00 hrs-17:00hrs.
Contact can also be made to the club through it’s: President-Ian Wills – 680-7783; Vice President-Jamal Duncan- 629-9133.
