The fire that ripped through the AH&L Kissoon building early Sunday morning was a result of the ignition of gas leaking in the building, according to Fire Chief Marlon Gentle.
Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle, said that what ignited the gas still eludes investigators since it could have been a number of things.
“There could have been many factors involved. There could have been even an electrical outlet, a lamp or anything that was generating enough heat could have ignited it because the gas is very, very flammable,” Gentle said in reference to Sunday’s fire.
Around 02:00 hours that morning, the Chinese General Store at Robb and Camp Streets went up in flames but quick work by the Guyana Fire Service prevented further disaster. Persons had stated that they heard an explosion.
He explained that the system in the building incorporated four 100-pound cylinders with gas being channeled to various parts of the building through a contraption of pipes and hoses.
He could not confirm, however, what ignited the gas but he suspected it was one of the electrical bulbs.
Gentle said that they have contacted persons who were in the building at the time of the fire. “We have enough evidence that the building was occupied by more than two people,” the Fire Chief said.
“There was some amount of living activity in the building. They are admitting to only two or three but our evidence has proven otherwise. It would be about six,” he said.
The two-storied building is owned by RNK Investments and housed a restaurant and hardware store.
The property is surrounded by other multi-million-dollar establishments like the recently erected Teleperformance building, the popular City Mall, as well as Republic Bank.
Owing to the magnitude of the fire, all units in Georgetown were called out and fire fighters on Sunday fought hard and long to contain the fire from spreading to the nearby buildings, which were also under threat.
The window panes in the upper flat of the Republic Bank building were shattered, forcing staffers to immediately replace them with ply board.
In 2001, fire had razed the Kissoon’s Furniture City which was located at the said Camp and Robb Streets location.
