It is a fact that could never be contradicted that once you achieve age and education, you tend to be better informed about life, the world and people. It is such a potent fact that it is stupid to reject it. The more educated you are, the older you get, the more you socialize in your city, country, in other countries, the deeper is your experience.
It is worth debating in scholarly fora why the East Indians in Guyana succumbed to the venomous race-baiting of Bharrat Jagdeo in the May 2015 General Elections. This sociological drama has no logic. East Indians in accepting this racist demagoguery, open themselves to the accusation of congenital stupidity.
Let us breakdown the adumbration of Jagdeo to see if there was a logical underpinning to it. He told Indians that if the PPP lost the election, the security forces would now be under the leadership of the APNU government that would turn a blind eye to those forces when they invade the homes of Indians and violently rob them. Mr. Jagdeo even went so far as to point to a robbery done by APNU on the Bourda Post Office.
The normal mind in Guyana must know that the security forces comprise 98 percent African Guyanese. If they do not like Indians and would beat and rob them up in their homes, why didn’t they do that for the fifteen years Jagdeo and Ramotar were in power? The record would show that not one serving solder or serving policeman was charged with a home invasion robbery. Policemen and soldiers while on active duty have been charged with robberies but in each case it was the normal criminal offence that was not perpetrated in the home of an Indian person. There have been home invasion robberies committed by former members of the force.
The answer is that the security forces didn’t rampage against Indians because, he, Mr. Jagdeo as de jure President from 1999 to 2011 and de facto President from 2011 to 2015, prevented them. There cannot be an alternative explanation. Let us go through the scenario again. If APNU wins, the security forces will go into the homes of Indians, loot and kill them. The APNU government and the security forces are cut from the same cloth so the security forces will be given a free hand to behave like this.
The question is what mesmerizing power Jagdeo had over the security forces that made them so quiet from 1999 to 2015? Let us attempt an answer. The men in uniform didn’t kill Indians because Jagdeo as President would have hunted them down. Here is where stupidity meets irrationality. It had to be the same security forces that would have arrested the home invaders.
So they hated Indians, rampaged through their homes and killed them and the officers from the army and police were the ones that would have been ordered to arrest the wrong-doers. Does this make any sense? Did Indian buy this demagogic miasma from Jagdeo during the election campaign?
There are asininities in the Jagdeo race formula that are terribly childish. Let us cite Jagdeo once again. APNU and the security forces, according to Jagdeo, are kith and kin. If that is so why would the police and army devastate the image of their brothers in government by creating a war against Indian by robbing them and killing them?
If the security forces did that, would they not be weakening their kith and kin who are in power because the world will not condone such mayhem?
If other words, the security forces which so hate Indians did nothing from 1999 to 2015 to lacerate the image and credibility of Mr. Jagdeo who became a Champion of the Earth and accumulated a plethora of honorary doctorates but as soon as APNU gets in power, the world’s eyes will turn toward Guyana because there will be blood running in the streets; the victims will be Indians.
Finally, the Post Office heist. Just before the election, the Bourda Post Office was robbed and old age pension money was stolen. On the campaign trail, Jagdeo insinuated it was the work of the opposition. All of this was to incite fear in Indian people. The insinuation was that the opposition needed campaign money. The scare-mongering tactics worked. The Indians drank Jagdeo’s poison. They voted in huge numbers for the PPP. But it leaves open the question as to the mind of the Guyanese East Indian. Surely one had to be an idiot to think that the opposition is so powerful but it would leave super-rich companies and rob old age pensioners of their pittance.
