… First Lady encourages students to develop Guyana
By Shyon Hoppie
Success Elementary School produced 24 of top one per cent performers at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) countrywide. A total of 166 students comprised the top one per cent. The top two, Cherai Solomon and Shania Eastman, were students of Success Elementary School.
The school honoured the top performing students at the National Cultural Centre when it hosted its fifth annual Graduation and Prize giving Ceremony on Tuesday.
First Lady, Mrs Sandra Granger, was the Guest Speaker. She delivered the charge to the graduates.
She thanked the Director of the private institution, ‘Sir’ Wilfred Success for permitting her the opportunity to be part of the gathering for the school’s fifth prize-giving ceremony.
“I wish to say thank you to the teachers, students and everyone who supported the graduating class of 2015 and also everyone who encouraged these young minds throughout the school year.”
She encouraged the graduates to be career-oriented and to continue to focus on their studies, she also compelled on the education is the key fact for a successful life acknowledging the hard work of parents, relatives and friends who supported and encouraged the young minds that have already made it thus far.
“The students excelled because of their efforts and dedication to their studies; although I knew that some of them would have preferred being caught up in a game or two or some other form of entertainment,” the First Lady stated.
She added that the country’s young people are the hope of the country. More than 50 per cent of the population is below the age of 24 and sadly, many of them are unemployed and high school drop outs because of poverty and other factors, Mrs Granger said.
She said that Guyana was a country blessed with a wealth of human and natural resources and as a country, “we needed to develop the energy sector, fisheries, and agricultural sector for food security as well as build the export market.”
The need to develop Guyana’s mining sector is prevalent, Mrs. Granger said. Guyana, must pay keen attention to doing so sustainably, so that its people could secure the massive benefits of the mineral resources for many years to come, she said.
The four-hour long ceremony consisted of songs, dances, distribution of certificates and presentation of prizes amongst others.
Cherai Solomon was named the valedictorian. He grabbed the top spot in the country putting his school Success Elementary at the forefront; his colleagues Shania Eastman gained the second position with 529 marks and Afeefah London, who was awarded 525 marks gained sixth place in the country.
Among the students who were awarded prizes were the most improved student, Naomi Stephens, and the most rounded student Damesha McIntosh. They were both awarded places at Queen’s College.
Approximately 15,000 students from across Guyana wrote the NGSA examinations.
