– St. Roses, MHS, LTI, Kwakwani reach U-19 Final Four

Linden’s Mackenzie High School (MHS) remained unbeaten yesterday in the Under-14 category of the National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF) following a 49-7 rout of Bishop’s High in a clash of Senior Secondary Schools at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Mackenzie High’s forward, Stephon Duncan and pint-sized guard Kobe Tappin ensured that they were ahead early in the game. Tappin scored 14 points with Duncan contributing 10 points along with seven rebounds in the win.
Roydon Glasgow had five of Bishop’s seven points. Tappin scored seven points, which included a huge three-pointer and his offensive counterpart, Duncan six points to lead their school to a 19-5 lead at the end of the first half of the game.
The duo combined again in the second half to put pressure on Bishop’s on both ends of the court as they also employed a full-court man-to-man defensive strategy to strangle Bishop’s, which only managed two points as a result in the entire 15-minute period.
On Tuesday night, St. Roses High beat Kwakwani Secondary 26-12 in the U-14 competition, as Anthony Yansen scored 10 points with 11 rebounds. Kadeem Dover had 10 of the 12 Kwakwani points in the game.
Mackenzie High had also defeated Marian Academy 34-11 in the same category the night before with forward, Yonnick Tappin scoring 13 points. Marian’s forward, Corey Graham finished with five points and six rebounds for his school.
In the U-16 group, Bishop’s High won 55-44 against Plaisance Secondary as Timothy Thompson recorded another double-double with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Michael Lewis scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Webster McRae added 12 points.
For Plaisance, Nigel Bowen top scored with 14 points, completed with 11 rebounds while Jared Sears scored nine points and grabbed 15 ‘boards’. Lorenzo Bunbury and Andrew Johnson scored nine points each.
In the Under-19 competition, Bishop’s High School walloped St. Joseph High 78-26; Thompson poured in19 points and 12 rebounds, while Daniel Haynes also had a double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Marvin Durant scored 18 points.
For St. Joseph, Lemuel Grant and Jacques Vincente had 10 points apiece.
New Amsterdam Multilateral School beat Government Technical Institute (GTI) 48-32 with Neil Wills contributing 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kevon Wiggins and Tafaway Dey had 13 and 11 points respectively.
Kelwyn Griffith and Sebastian Luke had seven points apiece for GTI.
Mackenzie High edged Marian Academy 45-37 with Tyrese Mitchell putting in 18 points and Alister Lewis eight points. For Marian, Dwayne Obermuller had nine and Damani Thomas eight points and 10 rebounds.
Mackenzie High joined St. Roses High, Linden Technical Institute and Kwakwani Secondary in the Final Four of the Under-19 competition of the 2015 NSBF, which will be played on Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
