The Guyana Police Force will be seeking the advice of the Director of Public Prosecution on the way forward with respect to the two policemen who fatally shot a mentally ill man at Cane Grove, Mahaica on Saturday last.
The two ranks, who were arrested immediately after the shooting, are now on open arrest awaiting their fate.
The mentally ill man, Junior Gulliver, 30, was shot dead by the police who had responded to reports that he was threatening villagers.
The police had claimed that Gulliver attacked them with a cutlass, causing them to resort to the use of their weapons.
But the man’s relatives as well as several neighbours gave a totally different version of what transpired, with many of them claiming that Gulliver’s killing was premeditated.
According to relatives, some of whom claimed to be eyewitnesses, the police ranks shot Gulliver while he was unarmed.
A post mortem examination performed yesterday by Dr. Nehaul Singh revealed that Gulliver was shot twice, from two different caliber weapons, the larger of which inflicted the fatal wound.
The PM found that Gulliver died from perforation of the lung and spinal gunshot injury.
According to a police source, the fatal bullet which was fired from a rifle, passed through his lungs and spine from the front of his body.
The other bullet, fired from a smaller caliber weapon struck his left shoulder, causing minimal damage.
Despite damning statements from those who claimed to be eyewitnesses, the DPP will have to decide if the ranks indeed acted in self defence or with malice.
“There will definitely be charges –but the gravity of the charge is unknown at this point. That is for the DPP to decide,” the source said.
