Dear Editor,
It is indeed strange that not too many high positioned individuals who have lost their jobs at various State run Corporation / Departments and the opposition is screaming “ witch hunting”. Actually there is some consternation among those who supported the ruling coalition that they have left so many in place even though they screamed corruption and nepotism when they were in opposition.
This is politics, the present opposition finds it convenient to have selective amnesia when the members say and oppose the firing and sacking of the GUYSUCO or other boards.
First and foremost these positions were filled with the oppositions fervent supporters, friends and in some cases family members.
In politics all appointees serve at the pleasure of the governing party. This is not unique to Guyana. It is practised throughout the world, it is not witch-hunting.
As a matter of record, the present APNU + AFC Government seems to be moving rather lackadaisically with this transformation via its transition team if there is one.
It’s incumbent upon the APNU+ AFC coalition to make sure that the foot soldiers who were aggressively pushing their agenda and campaigning vigorously for them be duly rewarded, because if they are not, come next election the foot soldiers overlooked during the process maybe not be willing to participate on their behalf again. It is likely they will jump ship or even form their own party, with such a slim margin of victory this can be a disaster for the coalition
It is hypocritical for the losing party to cry foul when it has been weighted, measured and found wanting for the past two decades. The exorbitantly paid appointees by association and political activism , are grossly incompetent, and are casualties within the confines of said findings; they deserve to be fired. They should not be allowed to stay on. The decent and honorable thing for them to do would be to resign.
But even this type of appropriate behaviour is lacking, seeing that over a month has passed and only a minute percentage have done so, the APNU+ AFC transition team should have recommended that these board members , appointed officers and CEO , who were listed candidates and activist, resign or be sacked.
There are several State Agencies , even if semi- autonomous that come to the forefront
NICIL — why are these individuals still on board, after so many negative accusations of inappropriate and illegal conduct on their part by the present coalition it was in opposition.
GPL— Here is an exorbitantly paid CEO who never misses a blackout who is paid as much as a US- paid CEO with less customer base and for several decades still can’t get it right.
GEA — the CEO is a political activist for the losing party. Why is he still there? Is it because he may have family members who are now in the ruling party? Is the coalition now saying that their criticism of corruption was baseless or is it they are weak same nepotism/ cronyism? This is an individual that is now being tabled in the media a young rising star of the PPP. Are we now sleeping with the corrupt enemy? I hope we can sleep with one eye open.
GRA —- Nepotism in this agency is unquestionable, and should not be tolerated
The impetus should be to put your house and family in order first for the future. It is time to sack previous appointees and boards and replace them with your own qualified foot soldiers (Supporters).
I just hope that the relevant Ministers have the guts and the will to act decisively or is it that they are satisfied with their own placement and no longer care for the party and its members and activists.
I know that there are hard working people in the AFC who are highly qualified and who have the experience, who have sacrificed and who have worked hard but other than the minister positions there has been no move to place them.
In politics it is “to the victor goes the spoils”. All over the world it is [politically correct and especially correct in Guyana) as the present administration made corruption one of its key platform but yet is not moving to remove the corrupt and the politically appointed.
