Magistrate Leron Daly jailed a Timehri man for six months after he was found guilty of stealing a quantity of articles belonging to the United States Embassy.
Ryan Waddle, 25, of Bones Scheme Timehri, East Bank Demerara broke and entered the storage bond of Amerijet and stole a quantity of articles valued $813,400 – property of the United States Embassy – between November 19 and 20, 2013. His trial commenced on January 21, last.
Police Inspector Michael Grant prosecuted, and called a total of eight witnesses to testify.
Before handing down her sentence, Magistrate Daly considered the fact that the defendant was on remand for the past eighteen months. Albert Rajaran, 34, and Waddle were jointly charged with the offence. However, Rajaran pleaded guilty at his first court appearance on November 25, 2013. He was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment by former Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
According to court facts, on November 19 at about 16:30hrs, the Assistant Manager, Ms. Ceres, secured the storage bond at Timehri, leaving the items therein.
However, on November 20, at about 11:30hrs, Ms. Ceres received ‘certain information’ and returned to the storage bond where she discovered that someone had broken into the bond. Further checks revealed the articles missing.
As a result, Rajaran was contacted, told of the allegations and cautioned. He admitted to committing the offence and led the police to two separate locations where the loot was stored, and also handed over his portion of the booty. Waddle was subsequently contacted, under caution he admitted to committing the offence and led the police to the place where he claimed to have kept his portion, but none of the items were recovered.
