President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle is in Doha, Qatar for the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) Congress scheduled from today to Saturday. This is the first time the CARICOM Region is being
represented at this prestigious and important boxing forum where decisions governing the sport worldwide are made.
Ninvalle explained that he is traveling to the forum with a specific mandate from the other Caribbean heads as they seek to have the region benefit and have a voice in the sport. He is also expected to discuss the planned 10-nation tournament scheduled for later this year, seeking support and direction on staging the event.
During last year, Ninvalle was appointed, following the support of his fellow Caribbean counterparts, to represent the region on AIBA’s executive.
President of the Jamaica Boxing Association, Stephen Jones, had said after the appointment, that the region is re-energised by its recent promotion to the AIBA hierarchy and the Caribbean is now a more united boxing family.
“I can say without hesitation that the election of Mr. (Steve) Ninvalle to AIBA’s Executive Committee is the most positive move that has happened to the sport of boxing in our region in years. To have a voice that is not only respected by the federations in the Americas, but understands the plight that we have faced is paramount,” Jones said.
Ninvalle created history at the Congress in South Korea when he became the first person from the 15-nation CARICOM to be elected to the Executive Committee of AIBA.
Jones stated that the Caribbean needs to have its concerns relayed directly to AIBA and Ninvalle’s election could not have come at a better time.
“With a voice on the Executive Committee at the very least our concerns would be heard. I applaud Steve and will ensure that he has the full support of the Jamaica Boxing Association whenever necessary,” Jones had stated.
Jones had hinted at one part of what the region would be looking for as one voice from the governing body when he stated, “The most important thing at the moment would be more assistance from AIBA, whether it is courses for the coaches and officials, or tournaments that can be considered qualifying events for the Olympics.”
