The Just Youth It Conference (JYIC) officially launched the countdown for the August 15 event, this past weekend.
The launch was conducted at the St. Joseph High School where organisers of the event, the Come Alive Network Inc. (CANI), shared details what to expect this year to align with International Youth Day.
According to President of CANI, Ryan Hoppie, the August event will feature motivational speakers, workshops and various sessions which touch on youth policies. The ages the group considers as youth, Hoppie said, will be from 16 to 35.
“We want JYIC 2015 to be a refuelling point for youth leaders; we also want it to be an inspiration platform for young people who are unsure about what life has to offer them. We want to provide opportunities for young people to network with other young people and implement projects,” said Hoppie.
Coming off a similar event last year, the CANI President said that the group has seen collaborations with a number of organisations, including Help and Shelter and the Witness Project. These organisations he said will be responsible for hosting “external breakout sessions”, which tackle specific issues which concern today’s youth.
Moreover, he added that with Saturday’s launch, his group has opened registration for the other youth organisations to be part of the second annual event.
“They are partnering to facilitate sessions around youth themed issues such as youth entrepreneurship, the environment, work ethics and others,” said Hoppie.
Speakers addressing the audience this year are young scholar Teocah Dove, agricultural entrepreneur, Mark Boneo and videogame animator, Caiphus Moore.
The CANI President elaborated that the latter will touch on sectors of Guyana’s industry which would be of particular interest to young people. He said that Moore will be focusing his address on the benefits and possibilities of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector. As a videogame animator for the popular company, Electronic Arts, Hoppie said that Moore is capable of illustration the possibilities of the animation industry.
Meanwhile, Boneo’s experience as a young agriculturist in the field of hydroponics can spark interest in the potential of Guyana’s agricultural sector, explained Hoppie. Since Guyana is the leading agricultural country in the region the CANI President said “we are hoping that having (Boneo) as a speaker will encourage young people to consider agriculture as a cool field in terms of career choices.”
The organisers of JYIC also related that they have received support from the diplomatic community and work is being done to collaborate with the Ministry of Education’s Youth Department.
