Two prominent cricket boards, East Coast Cricket Board and Georgetown Cricket Association have provided support for their sister organization, Berbice Cricket Board as it prepares for the postponed fundraiser…..”Caricom Championship 2015″. The tournament will now be played on Sunday July 19, 2015 at the Albion ground.
Proceeds from this event will be used mainly to organise a three day first division cricket competition for teams in Berbice.
At a simple ceremony held in Georgetown recently, Bissoondyal Singh, President of East Coast Cricket Board and former Vice President of the Guyana Cricket Board said that he had a discussion with Roger Harper and other members of the Georgetown Cricket Association and they willingly agreed to help the Berbice Cricket Board in its effort to play three day cricket for first division teams in Berbice.
In a joint statement from both cricket organizations, they said that they are aware that no subvention was given to the BCB for over five years, and as a result, they thought it fitting to assist. They themselves are suffering the same fate, the release said despite the fact that ICC provides monies for cricket development around the world.
In response, Malcolm Peters speaking on behalf of the Berbice Cricket Board, thanked the ECCB and the GCA for their generosity and promised to reciprocate the favour when the time is right. He emphasized the importance of the longer version of the game for proper development of the young players. He said that this form of cricket will help players to concentrate for long periods thus toughening their mental strength.
This competition will not only help Berbice but Guyana and West Indies as well. He also mentioned that this partnership between these cricket boards is a great example of how the game should be run in Guyana, bringing unity and strength. He hopes that the new government will act swiftly and bring an end to the cricket fiasco in Guyana.
The Caricom Championship will see eight top first division teams in Berbice taking part in a ten over knockout competition with the final of 20 overs duration to be played under lights for a top prize of $80,000 and trophy. The runner up will receive $40,000 and trophy with the losing finalists $15,000 each. Man of the match in every game will be rewarded. The teams will don coloured clothing and use white balls. Action begins at 10am sharp.
Young Warriors/Rose Hall CC/Edinburgh Combined will tackle Upper Corentyne/Skeldon Combined in the opening. Game two will see Albion CC taking on Bermine/Police Combined. Game 3 is Port Mourant vs Bush Lot/D’Edward Combined and Game 4 will see Blairmont/West Berbice Combined vs Rose Hall Town. The preliminary games will play in a festival format to create non-stop action.
The winner of game 1 and 2 play in the first seminal and the winner of game 3 and 4 plays in the other.
The BCB would like to thank the following sponsors: ANSA MCAL under the Carib Brand, Sentinel Security, Republic Bank Berbice Branches, Massy Industries, The New Building Society Ltd, Balram Shane of Rose Hall Town, Sandeep Ramdass of Ishmail Poultry, popularly known as Pampey, Asheik and Sons Motor Spares and Auto Sale, Safraz Photo Studio, Rocky of Palace Taxi Service, Restaurant and Bar, D Harricharran of Beauty and Home Design, Sheik Mohamed of Tiger Sports Club, Office Express, Trophy Stall, Bourda Market and Price is Right Supermarket of No 79 Corriverton.
