The Tactical Services Unit Rifle #1 of the Guyana Police Force proved once again that it is the best for the job when it comes to taking command of the Route March. This was proven when the unit copped two titles at the 176th anniversary of the Guyana Police force route march, yesterday. It was also adjudged ‘Best Overall Performance’.
At 6:00 hours as the sun was shining its morning rays of glory, various units of the Guyana Police Force assembled in the vicinity of the Police Headquarters, Eve Leary. There were the Tactical Services Unit, CID Ranks, Immigration, Mounted Branch, Scouts Association, Community Policing Groups and Women Police Organisation among others.
Even though this historic event did not attract the massive crowds as previous years, it still drew a sizeable number of spectators as the participants put on a spectacular show. The Guyana Police Force band led the parade through the streets of Georgetown while the judges looked for the best salutes, the best unit on the marches, armoury and not forgetting uniformity.
The first salute was taken by the new Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, in the presence of Permanent Secretary, Angela Johnson; Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud and Assistant Commissioner of Police Karim Baksh in front of the Ministry on Brickdam as the Musical Band Played along for the other ranks and members to carry on with their duties.
They then wended their way back to the Eve Leary Headquarters to meet the commissioner for his salute before the prize giving ceremony.
At the end of the parade, Commissioner Seelall Persaud, addressed his ranks by congratulating them all on the 176th anniversary of the Guyana Police Force sighting that this was one of the largest route marches ever held by the force.
“I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for your performances during the recently held National and Regional election… Elections in Guyana over the years had been pretty tricky business and one of the most crucial security operations,” the Commissioner said.
He thanked the ranks for their job well done and for an almost eventless elections, thanks to all the training, planning and organising of their operations.
He then noted, “We are currently working on our accountability and improved delivery of services and so we ask to be integrated into society and not be separated or isolated from the society.”
“We will have our critics but in our hearts we must know that what we are doing is that of the best of our abilities… We are providing a service that no one else is providing and we will do that with dedication and professionalism.”
In the end various units were awarded for their road performances with trophies and cash varying from $25,000 to $100,000. However the top three judging categories were best uniformed, best senior category and best overall performance.
First place was won by the TSU Rifle #1. Runner up was the Presidential Guards. The Senior Category was won by the Felix Austin Police Academy females and the second place was awarded to the A Division Females.
In the Civilian Category, the CID males took the top honours, leaving the Women Policing Organisation as the runners up. The Linden Scouts division was no match for the Headquarters Scouts who took the first prize. The final category the Neighbourhood Policing Group took first place in front of the Community Policing Group.
