– wounded man reportedly left for several hours on foreshore
Police have detained a member of the Berbice Anti Smuggling Squad (BASS) following the shooting death of an alleged smuggler at around 20:00 hrs on Saturday.
Charles Caesar, 40, of Line Path, Skeldon, and formerly of Fyrish Village, Corentyne, was shot in the right leg during a confrontation with the ranks.
He reportedly bled to death after being left on the Number 66 Village foreshore.
According to information, Ceasar and five other men were on the foreshore loading a minibus with beverages that were smuggled from neighbouring Suriname.
The men were cornered by members of BASS who ordered them not to move. However, Caesar reportedly made a dash for it and it was alleged that one of the ranks opened fire, hitting Ceasar in the leg.
The other alleged smugglers were taken into custody.
But the wounded Caesar was reportedly left on the foreshore until around 00:55 hrs. He was subsequently rushed to the Skeldon Hospital where he died.
Information revealed that BASS operatives are saying that they fired one shot in the air.
According to a source three spent shells were found at the scene.
The BASS operatives would usually carry 9mm pistols. Residents who knew Caesar are calling for a thorough investigation into the matter. Many have repeatedly called for the group to be disbanded.
A police release stated that Caesar was found about 00.55hrs yesterday on the foreshore at No. 66 Village, Corentyne, with a suspected gunshot injury.
He was taken to the Skeldon Hospital where he succumbed while receiving medical treatment.
