Mahaicony Technical Institute overcame Bush Lot Secondary 4-3 on penalty kicks to win the Region 5 Zone of the Digicel National Schools Football Championships yesterday at Number 5 ground, West Coast Berbice.
Both teams had their fair share of possession in the opening minutes but failed to find the back of the nets as shots were sent far and wide as no goals were scored in the first half. The teams showed more purpose after the break, producing a decent level of entertainment that was befitting a final.
It was Bush Lot who took the lead in the 49th minute when Shaquille De Hearte neatly tapped in a corner kick.
Mahaicony should have equalized moments later but Brain Thom fired his shot just over the bar after he received a pass from the talented Dawit Watts. The pace increased rapidly as the game progressed and Bush Lot’s Akeem Daniels wasted an opportunity to extend the lead, sending his shot straight into the lap of Mahaicony’s goalkeeper Ryan Morrison after being one on one with him in the area.
Shortly after, Morrison did well to deny De Hearte after the forward had a shot from the right side of the goal. Watts played with flair and created a number of chances, but Mahaicony found it difficult to beat Bush Lot custodian, Lynford Reynolds.
Andrew Bailey could have anchored the game for Bush Lot in the 80th minute after being awarded a penalty, however Morrison pulled off a tremendous save to keep his team in the hunt.
With three minutes of regulation time remaining, Mahaicony drew level, Watts nicely setting up Christopher Abbensetts who slotted home from inside the box. The remaining three minutes couldn’t separate the teams.
It was now down to the goalkeepers to see their team advance and as it turned out, Morrison it was who became the hero, denying Titus Webster who took Bush Lot’s fourth penalty. Andrew Bailey, Ruel Chester and Eli Nurse converted for the runner-up while Jeremiah Pereira sent his shot wide.
Watts, Brian Thom, Dunzel Burnette and Troyden Moore scored for the winners. (Zaheer Mohamed)
