Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, disclosed yesterday that Superintendent Wayne DeHarte, will be heading to Rome, Italy, for a training programme titled “The Illicit Economy and Financial flows investigations and Asset Recovery.”
Minister Harmon said that Cabinet was also briefed that having regard to its intention to pursue aggressively, the state asset recovery unit activities, attending the programme would be an excellent move. It is fully funded by the government of Italy through the CARICOM Secretariat for specifically named CARICOM countries, one of which is Guyana.
It is scheduled to run from July 6 to July 17. The Minister of State said that the path which government has taken to recover state assets is something that finds favour with CARICOM countries and the Secretariat as well as the Government of Italy.
He said that government has received overwhelming support from persons in the Diaspora who are willing to even put their jobs on hold to lend a helping hand in that process.
Harmon noted that Presidential Advisor, Clive Thomas, who is in charge of the Stolen Assets Recovery Programme is already in touch with some international agencies and will provide further details in that regard in due time.
