Police continue to hold a city food vendor and his wife as they await the findings of investigators from the Guyana Fire Service, as to the cause of the blaze that destroyed a two-storey house at Coglan Dam, West Bank Demerara on
Monday.
Police detained the man, Youmanram Bissesar, and his wife, after it was learnt that they were involved in a dispute with his ex-wife Kowsilla Bhagwandin over the property.
The man had separated from Bhagwandin about six years ago and had started another family on the East Coast of Demerara.
But on Saturday, Bissesar and his new wife along with their children forcibly moved into the West Demerara house, which at the time was being occupied by Bhagwandin and the two sons she bore him.
On Monday Bhagwandin obtained a restraining order which was served on her ex-husband who at the time was plying his trade in the city.
His wife was the last person seen leaving the house, a few hours before the fire was observed.
Bhagwandin ruled out electricity as the cause of the fire, since she told this newspaper that the power supply to the property had been disconnected two years ago.
“He mek GPL cut off the electricity,” Bhagwandin told this newspaper.
Neighbours said that they saw fire coming from the kitchen area of the house a few hours after Bissesar’s wife left.
Bhagwandin, who lost all of her belongings in the fire, said that three years ago, her ex-husband had threatened to burn the house down.
Police, who had taken a report of the threat, are using that as one of the bases for their own investigations.
