A businessman who allegedly assaulted his shop assistant with a cutlass, over missing commodities, was yesterday released on $150,000 bail on a wounding charge.
It is alleged that on June 18, at Wineperu Backdam, Stephen Wilson unlawfully and maliciously wounded Loyette Burke.
Wilson, 43, pleaded not guilty to the charge before Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan.
Police Corporal, Deniro Jones told the court that on the day in question, Wilson confronted Burke in relation to items missing from his shop.
As a result, an argument ensued between the two parties. Wilson became annoyed, armed himself with a cutlass and dealt the woman several lashes about her body causing her to receive injuries.
Jones disclosed that the victim is still hospitalised. He also tendered a medical certificate to the court.
The Prosecutor did not object to the defendant being granted pre-trial liberty but asked that it be fixed in a substantial amount.
The Magistrate ordered Wilson not to go within fifty feet of the woman.
This matter will be heard again on July 13, at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
In another case, Magistrate Mc Lennan remanded a Kwakwani driver to prison after he was charged with simple larceny.
The man, George Gildharie is accused of stealing 30 Wallaba posts valued $60,000 between June 19 and
26 at Roraima Road, Upper Berbice River. The articles are said to be the property of Shameer Yusuf.
It was further alleged that the defendant escaped from lawful custody.
The charge stated that on June 19, at the Kwakwani Police Station, Gildharie escaped from custody while on a criminal charge of simple larceny. He denied the allegations after they were read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones, opposed bail and Gildharie was remanded to prison until July 17.
He will make his next court appearance at the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court.
