A Glasgow, East Bank Berbice family is now severely traumatised after bandits invaded their home on Monday evening and terrorised the occupants.
According to the home owner, 33-year-old Virginia Persaud called ‘Sirika’, at the time she was with her son, 14, daughter, 3, and her 68-year-old father who is a pensioner. She stated that around 22:00 hrs, she along with her daughter and father had retired to bed. Her son was still up watching television.
They were aroused by the sound of her car alarm which she found strange. She called out to her son to bring the key so that she could take off the alarm. However, without warning, they felt the house start to shake and before they could comprehend what was taking place they felt the front door started to rock.
It quickly became evident that bandits had kicked down the door and entered the house. The four men then proceeded to beat the woman and her two children whilst using an abundance of expletives. The family was brutalised as the thieves demanded money, gold and car keys. The woman stated that she shouted for “thief” and “help” but one of the bandits fired a shot to keep her quiet. The men threatened to kill them if they did not comply.
The woman stated that the commotion aroused her father who was in another room. The man armed himself with a cutlass and tried to confront the bandits, but he was overpowered.
The men subsequently left with only the car keys, after she continued to shout for help. The family was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where they were treated and later sent away.
Persaud was struck on her head and other parts of her body. The wound on her head required four stitches. Her son’s head was also lacerated and subsequently had to be sutured.
The matter was reported and the police responded promptly, arresting several persons, one of whom has reportedly been positively identified. Investigations are continuing.
