Keon Brewster, 21 of B Field Sophia, was jailed for four years after he pleaded guilty to a drug trafficking charge before Magistrate Ann McLennon. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $17,020,800
On May 29, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Timehri, Brewster had 6.3kg of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
The convict along with Chris Douglas, of Timehri and Loric Williams, of 57 Prospect, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge at their first court appearance on May 31.
Douglas and Williams have maintained their not guilty pleas and are currently on trial in relation to this matter.
At that hearing, Police Prosecutor, Corporal Bharrat Mangru, had told the court that Brewster is an American citizen. He said that on the day in question, Brewster was an outgoing passenger on a Dynamic Airways flight, destined for John F. Kennedy Airport, USA.
Mangru revealed that a routine check was conducted on the defendant and three bottles of El Dorado Rum was found in his hand luggage. The rum was probed because the contents of the bottles seemed thicker than usual.
The substance in the bottle was tested and proved positive for cocaine.
As a result, Brewster was arrested and told of the offence. He later implicated the two other defendants. The police then reviewed CCTV footage from the airport, which showed Douglas and Williams leaving the washroom area and acting in a suspicious manner.
Mangru also stated that the defendants provided the police with caution statements admitting to the offence.
During that court hearing, Attorney Latchmie Rahamat, made a bail application on behalf of Williams. She argued that during investigations the police forced her client to sign a statement.
The lawyer contended that the accused has no knowledge of the alleged narcotic.
Rahamat explained that Douglas provided the police with a statement, which they demanded her client to sign. She asserted that the accused has an unblemished criminal record and at the time of his arrest he was employed as an AC technician at the CJIA.
Douglas’s attorney, Nigel Hughes, requested that his client be released on reasonable bail because he has no knowledge of the alleged cocaine. He too contended that his client has an unblemished criminal record.
And Levi Williams, 29, of 12 Norton Street, Lodge was remanded to prison, when he appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennon yesterday to answer a wounding charge.
It is alleged that on June 17, at D’Urban Backlands, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Jordan Sampson with intent to maim, disable or disfigure him.
Williams pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police Corporal, Deniro Jones, informed the court that the defendant stabbed the victim to the eye. He noted that the victim is still hospitalized.
Williams was remanded until July 7, 2015.
