– abductors reportedly demanded $40M ransom
As police continue their search for the men who abducted and shot carwash owner Bevon Chung, some of the wounded man’s close friends have accused a former associate of spearheading the attack and demanding $40M for the businessman’s release.
They have however denied that the abduction was linked to drug trafficking.
Chung, 37, of Lot 142 Guyhoc Park, was shot last Friday evening while chatting with a Customs Anti-Narcotics (CANU) rank outside a restaurant located near his Durban Street and Vlissengen Road wash-bay.
According to an associate, Chung and a ‘close friend’ were standing outside the restaurant when three men drove up in a car.
The men, who were armed, reportedly struck the friend, who is said to be a CANU officer, on the head and ordered him to lay face-down. After relieving the rank of his firearm, the gunmen ordered Chung into their car and fled the scene.
Kaieteur News was told that one of Chung’s abductors was an individual with whom he had a previous dispute over a female.
It is alleged that while they were driving, the man told Chung “when we reach where we going, and I mek the phone call, you tell them the ransom is $40 M.”
Chung’s abductors eventually took him to Plum Park, Sophia, where their vehicle reportedly suffered a puncture. Leaving one man to guard Chung, the driver and the alleged mastermind reportedly disembarked to change the tyre.
Chung’s friends alleged that the businessman then punched his guard and exited the car. As he fled, one of the abductors shot him in the back, but he managed to seek refuge in a house and contact his workers. They eventually arrived and took him to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Chung’s friends say that police are still to take a statement from him. They also refuted any suggestion that the abduction was connected to the recent massive drug bust, in which cocaine was hidden in a shipment of shrimp.
A senior police official said that investigators have taken a statement from one of the victims of last Friday’s attack. Police also have the ‘call names’ of the three alleged perpetrators, but are still to locate them.
During the initial stages of the investigation, police detained a man and a woman from Sophia house, but the official explained that were only held after a .32 round was found at the premises.
