Teenager Sachia Vickery, who is born to Guyanese parents, playing out of the United States, advanced to the main draw for the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London, England after winning her qualifying competition
yesterday.
Vickery beat Puerto Rico’s Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 in the final game to book her spot among the big guns at Wimbledon.
The youngster, who is accompanied by her mother Paula Liverpool, who formerly hails from Kwakwani on the Berbice River, but currently resides in the United States, beat Nigina Abduraimova of Uzbekistan 6-0, 6-1 and Sorana Cirstea Romania 6-7(5-7), 6-3, 6-4 en-route to the clash with Pegula, who won her matches.
Vickery is set to face Ekaterina Makarova of Russia in her opening match of the tournament which opens Monday.
