…as Rehab Week activities continue
Inmates of the Palms Geriatric Home on Brickdam were pampered on Wednesday last,
when the Ministry of Public Health hosted one of its many activities for Rehabilitation Week 2015 under the theme, “Accessible rehab services through partnership with the community.”
Senior citizens of the Home were treated to a “SPA Day” compliments of the cosmetologists of Hair Tech International, Ruimveldt Lions Den and the Palms Rehabilitation Centre.
Beautiful smiles and cool relaxation was the atmosphere displayed by both male and female inmates as they were pampered to perfection. They were treated to facials, hair colouring and styling, manicure and pedicures.
The activity was one of many hosted by the Ministry in collaboration with various business entities and Non-Governmental organisations.
Rehab week is observed in the last week of June each year, aimed at bringing awareness to the Guyanese population about the different rehabilitation services available to them throughout Guyana.
Stacey Graves, one of the rehabilitation assistants at the Palms said, “Each department would host their programme as part of rehab week …so we decided to pamper our inmates with a
spa day as our way of giving back”.
“We have a patient here from the Ruimveldt Lions Den that is accessing the services here and so when we discussed what we had planned, he immediately came on board and so, hence the participation of the lions in this activity,” said June King-Elise, another rehabilitation assistant.
Last Monday at the Demico Car Park a road fair was held as part of the week long activities. The fair sparked attention as the booths were interesting and pleasing to the crowd. Apart from the informational aspect, persons got their blood pressure and blood sugar tested free of cost.
This unit of the Ministry of Public Health aims to provide on a national level, a wide range of rehabilitation services for persons with impairments and disabilities, enabling them to achieve an optimum level of functioning (physical, cognitive, social and emotional), thus affording them the means to change their lives towards acquiring a greater level of independence.
Rehabilitation is an integrated program of interventions that empower individuals with disabilities and chronic health conditions to achieve “personally fulfilling, socially meaningful, and functionally effective interaction” in their daily contexts.
This year’s activities kicked off with a fitness walk and Prayer breakfast on Sunday 21st June with members of the Ministry of Public Health, University of Guyana and other Rehabilitation societies in Guyana, and continued throughout the week in the various administrative regions with mini fairs and health programs.
The Ministry of Public Health has provided various rehabilitation services and programs in response to demand from persons with impairments and disabilities over the years.
They also ensure resourceful supervision and accountability for all related rehabilitation facilities of a semiautonomous nature such as vocational rehabilitation, counselling and training.
