Rockers demolish Jammers after slow start to reach finals with 75-45 win
Smithfield Rockers steadied themselves after a shaky start to hammer Rose Hall Town Jammers 75-45 for a lopsided victory and book their place in the final alongside Canje Knights in the NPG Packaging Inter club First Division Basketball competition for teams in Berbice.
The game was the second semi final game which was played last Sunday at The Fyrish basketball court.
The Rockers took some time to steady themselves and were behind 9-10 at the end of the first quarter. However at the start of the second stanza things began to take a turn as the Rockers began to find their range and were leading 30-24, by the half time whistle.
The Rockers were in full flow during the third quarter as they began to assault the Jammers from all angles to extend their lead to a sizable 40-35 by the end of that piece.
The last quarter was a walk in the park for the roving Rockers romped away for the big 75-45 win.
For the Smythfield Rockers, Michael Bowen led the way with 14 points and received good support from Shemroy McKenzie 10, Robert Esseboom 10 and Jamal Felix with 9.
The Rose Hall Jammers top scorers were Eon Wiggins with 11, Perry Cort and Osafo Profit with 10 each and Keven Wiggins with 8.
The final is set for Sunday between Smythfield Rockers and Canje Knights at the Fyrish Basketball Court and is expected to be played under lights. In The third place playoff host Fyrish Black Sharks are expected to match skills with Rose Hall Town Jammers.
Canje Knights had destroyed Fyrish Black Sharks 83-66 in the first semifinal to book their place in the final.
The top two teams will receive cash incentives and medals. The most valuable player will also be presented with a trophy. The organiser is Vibert Garrett. (Samuel Whyte)
