Gunmen abducted a carwash owner and then left him in Sophia with gunshot injuries to his chest and back shortly after 20.30 hrs yesterday.
Bevon Chung, 37, of 142 Guyhoc Park, was reportedly abducted from his D’Urban Street and Vlissengen Road, Wortmanville, establishment by a group of men, including one who was armed with a submachine gun.
At the time, he was in conversation with a member of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit.
According to reports, Chung, his employees, and the rank from the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) were at the car wash which Chung operates when a group of men armed with guns arrived in a car.
Kaieteur News understands that the gunmen ordered the employees and the CANU rank to lie face down. They proceeded to relieve the rank of his firearm. They reportedly then forced Chung into their car and fled the scene.
The abandoned vehicle was later found in a trench in Plum Park, Sophia. Kaieteur News understands that Chung was found with gunshot wounds nearby and taken to the GPHC, where he was admitted.
His condition is reportedly listed as critical.
The shooting and abduction comes just a week after the drug enforcement officers in the United States busted a shipment of shrimp with 268 kilos of cocaine. The estimated value of that cocaine in the United States was US$12 million.
The police also arrested 59-year-old Heeralall Sukdeo, of Sukdeo and Sons Fishing, a shipping company based in Queens, New York. Sukdeo often went by the name Randolph Fraser.
Whether the abduction and shooting are related to the New York drug bust is still not known to the media. However, people close to the police say that whenever there is a big drug bust, Guyanese at home either get seriously hurt or they die.
Whether last night’s incident is a prelude is left to be seen.
