Recently, Round 2 of the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship concluded at Wallerfield International Raceway in Trinidad & Tobago. The weekend was jam packed with excitement with an estimated crowd of about 6,000 that were in attendance. The different Group classes put on a fantastic show on a mainly wet track for most of the days’ races. Although, there were some spills including a few cars that turned turtle, the days’ action played out very well with an even playing field. The track was newly repaved after decades from the ‘old’ pavement and proved to be a favourite amongst the racers. Saturdays’ strategies had to be turned inside out because race day had rain and lots of it.
The qualifying record holder of just over 40 seconds, Kristian Jeffrey (GUY) had to change his race-day strategy along with many other racers due to having a rain set-up to maximize traction. The action from race day was mainly contested on rain tires. In total, there were about 60 cars that were registered with many rivalries in the different classes.
The motto of race day was in order to finish first, you must first finish but, finishing in last place was still better than not finishing at all. Even not finishing at all was way better than not starting. Several racers and their cars were absent due to unknown reasons.
At the end of Round 2, the torch was unofficially passed onto the two Kristians. Kristian Jeffrey, the current CMRC point’s leader and reigning Champion, split points totals with Kristian Boodoosingh along with Gerard Carrington. With Group 4 being the unlimited class, race day saw the Mitsubishi Evolutions dominate and swept the podiums in all three events. For many years to come, Kristian Boodoosingh (T&T) who races in the United States of America with tremendous successes and Kristian Jeffrey (GUY) who races in North American (mainly in Canada) have won at every levels in his career in the many different series he competes in. Both racers are ultra-competitive and have the desire to win at any level. After witnessing Round 2, it is safe to say that the remaining rounds of the CMRC will be a joy to watch.
Not to put his performance on the backburner, but, Gerard Carrington certainly solidified himself as a legitimate racer. He can certainly compete on the same level! The sport is now at the highest level it has ever been and will certainly garner a lot of attention worldwide. There are certainly some world class drivers’ amongst this group of racers and going forward; this will make it exciting to watch. Every team works on a strategy and will make adjustments from time to time in order to gain that advantage that will mean success. Group 3 will see the likes of Gary Barrett (CAY), Paul Vieira (T&T), Danny Persaud (GUY) battle it out for the Championship. Whereas, Group 2 rivalries will be very intense as the list can go on and on with the Mark(s) including if it’s spelled differently, Marc, Jordan Powell (JAM), Shiraz Roshandin (GUY), Damien Nesbitt (T&T) unless an unknown emerges which is unlikely.
This half season report is to update everyone associated with the sport. Some people will have to defend their positions, some will have to maintain their positions and some will have to try to move up the standings. All in all, there are still enough races remaining to turn the tides and ‘new’ faces might emerges but, one thing is certain, the Championships have not been determined nor claimed.
At the half-way point, there have been more surprises than disappointments and we hope this season continues to thrill us. The list of competitors are expected to increase as the remaining rounds approaches especially when it’s a home race, more local talents are bound to register and we hope that most of the current competitors remain for the duration of season. What is certain, is that a ‘new’ face will emerge in the likes of Frankie ‘Next Gen’ Boodram (T&T). He has had great success in karting and is expected to make the jump into the CMRC at any time. His debut might be this season or next season but, he will certainly join the likes of the new faces that are emerging as the future stars of the Caribbean. These new faces are in transition to replace some of the great racers such as David Summerbell, Hollywood Gore, Andrew King, The Maloney’s from Barbados, The Mayers’, along with the resurgence of Kevin Jeffrey, Mark & Paul Vieira. By all means, these racers are not done with the sport as yet, however, with the infusion of these new talents from around the Caribbean during this transition stage; it will mean great things for this sport and all involved. If we can get caught off guard with any ‘new’ emerging talent that is relatively unknown, then, we say, bring it!!! It will benefit us all!!!
