Old rivals Guyana and Antigua and Barbuda would go head to head today when Group 2 action in the
Caribbean Football Union Men’s Olympic Qualifiers continue at the Antigua Recreation ground.
Having lost their opening game to Cuba 2-0 on Wednesday, a team which placed third in the CAC Games last November behind host Mexico and Venezuela, the Under-23 Golden Jaguars are in a must win situation against the home team which hammered Aruba 7-0 in their opening match also on Wednesday.
In an invited comment, Captain Daniel Wilson posited that the mental state of the team is very positive for the Antigua game.
“We have a positive frame of mind and though disappointed with the result we are comforted by the fact that we played with total heart. The coach has been very supportive and we’re learning on the job. He has encouraged us to think of this game as a step towards our international future three years down the road. He has taken the pressure off of us and now we can focus on just playing.”
Cuba has been together as a unit since last August and according to Head Coach Shabazz, the Guyana team put up a brave fight against them and he is proud of their efforts.
Against the home team this evening, Shabazz informed that Jamaal Harvey who came on as a substitute against Cuba and did well will replace Kadell Daniel in the starting eleven.
“Going into the game against Antigua we would treat them with the same respect as Cuba. They are a formidable opponent, more offensive than Cuba and in front of their home fans. Our squad is disciplined and works to
the point where they will give their blood. I think we will battle them with courage.”
Team Guyana: Goalkeeper – Anthony Whyte; Defenders – Joshua Brown, Daniel Whyte, Les Charles Chritchlow, William Europe; Midfielders – Jamaal Harvey, Daniel Wilson, Kareem Knights, Trayon Bobb; Forwards – Pernel Schultz, Delon Lanferman.
