DEAR EDITOR,
I’m a retired employee of the Guyana Telecommunication Corporation (G.T.C) and the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (G.T.T) Linden branch.
I started working with the G.T.C in the year 1969 at Mackenzie when the telephone building was situated at the junction of Hibiscus Lane and Casuarina Drive. It was then a 400-line installation with an external line plant staff of one senior technician (Supervisor) and six other staff members who maintained the telephone services around Mackenzie, Wismar, Christiansburg, Ituni and Kwakwani.
There were other technicians who maintained the switch and radio equipment. The number of staff then made attending to faulty services very effective and efficient.
Today, Linden has four installations (Exchanges) with very many telephone services, not to mention Ituni and the Kwakwani area. There is an external line plant staff of three technicians who are supported from time to time by technicians from Georgetown.
The limited staff (external plant staff) is under constant abuse and pressure from disgruntled subscribers. The poor maintenance to the faulty telephone services is no fault of the limited staff but is of great concern to citizens in Region 10.
The G.T.T management needs to take a serious view into its operation in order to bring a speedy closure to faults reported and clearance. The citizens of Region 10 need better, we have suffered too much and too long.
