Detectives in “G” Division, on the Essequibo Coast, (Pomeroon/Supenaam) and family members of
45-year-old Orton Benjamin, have launched a massive search for the missing man who was struck and presumably killed by a Guyana Defence vessel early Wednesday morning.
At the time he was transporting his wife and five-year-old son to the Liberty Primary School in the Lower Pomeroon River.
The GDF captain is cooperating with the police.
Benjamin, a farmer of Recess, Lower Pomeroon, was piloting his 15 HP engine boat when the tragedy occurred.
Benjamin’s wife and his five-year-old son managed to swim after the boat overturned. They were rescued and were transported to the Oscar Joseph Hospital.
Speaking from a bed in the outpatient ward of the Hospital, at Charity, Simone Benjamin, a teacher attached to the Liberty Primary School, in the Pomeroon River said that she was traveling to the Liberty Primary School when the accident occurred.
The traumatized teacher explained that her husband’s boat was struck from behind in the vicinity of Recess moments after they left their home.
Benjamin added that she hit her head and fell out of the boat. The motor which was attached to her husband’s boat also fell off.
After she was rescued by family members who rushed to their aid after learning of the accident, Benjamin said that she was placed back into the boat with her son who was unhurt.
The teacher said that she did not see her husband after the accident and has since presumed him dead since he appeared to have borne the blunt of the collision.
Benjamin’s condition is being monitored by doctors at the Oscar Joseph Hospital at Charity. Her blood pressure has since escalated. The couple had been married for the last 20 years. Benjamin said she and her husband shared a loving relationship.
Recently, an 18-year-old man died after his boat crashed into a tree.
