As the need for a cheaper source of energy continues to be highlighted in several quarters, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, disclosed during a press conference yesterday that the APNU+AFC administration
has not scrapped the idea of the Amaila Falls Hydro Project.
In fact, it is currently awaiting an economic viability report which is expected to be completed by top officials of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) who are currently in the country.
Harmon reminded that in the Tenth Parliament, when the APNU+AFCwas in opposition, it had expressed concerns about the feasibility of the hydro project. He said that it was important to note also, that even though it was against the raising of the debt ceiling to allow for the financial security of the project among other factors, limited support was still extended by the APNU+AFC.
He added, “In 2013, the then combined opposition stated that at that time, because we were not in receipt of all the information, we would wait on the economic study from the IDB.
“I am pleased to report that the IDB Vice President, Alexandre Meira da Rosa and the IDB General Manager of the Caribbean Department, Gerard Johnson are in the country and we expect the report on the economic viability of the project and we await it to make a decision on the way forward.”
President David Granger met with the IDB Vice President yesterday to discuss existing projects Guyana has with the IDB and plans for further projects.
Government however is engaged in talks with Brazil on possible hydro projects. The Minister of State said that at this point in time, the talks are in the early stage and is unable to say at this time, whether the ideas from those engagements would overshadow the “Amaila Hydro dream.”
