…says residents were badly misinformed
H. Nauth and Sons Civil Engineering Contracting Firm, for the umpteenth time, has been forced to defend itself after allegations surfaced about the quality of work that has been done on the contentious East Bank Berbice
road.
Residents had complained to the media about the quality of the work being done on the thoroughfare which is being done at a cost of close to $400M.
On Tuesday, senior personnel including owner, Keron Nauth, and Senior Engineer, Julian Archer, along with some other senior personnel raced to Berbice to sort the situation out.
However upon arrival and inspection of the work, the officials realized that the situation was blown out of proportion and residents were totally misinformed about the scope of work to be done in the area.
According to Mr. Nauth, most of the damage that was seen on the road was minor and what was called Third Party Damage (damage by others and no fault of the construction company). It was shown that Combines, over laden trucks, tractors with cage wheels and other heavy duty equipment used the road without due care.
Another point of contention was that most residents were of the impression that the road should have had a four-inch thick asphalted surface. However, according to the agreement, the road would be built to a specification of 1½ inches and not four inches as was wrongfully believed by residents.
Mr. Nauth in speaking to the media expressed his surprised that most of the residents were not informed of this fact. He also debunked the impression that the work should have ended at the end of Light Town, but stated that they were given a specification to construct approximately 12 kilometers of road and not to finish at the end of the village.
The contract was from Everton to wherever the 12-kilometer ends and according to Mr. Nauth neither his company has any control over where the contract ends. The cost of the contract was $393,000,000.
According to senior engineer, Julian Archer, the company did 478,000 square feet of road. It was revealed that the contract is still in the defect liability period and Nauth assured that any defects within the periods would be fixed by the company. Works are still ongoing on the road. The media was shown areas that were damaged and fixed by the company.
The areas that were highlighted in the media were already fixed and Nauth stated that the Company has and will maintain a no nonsense policy in doing its work.
The East Bank Berbice road stretches for 25 miles from New Amsterdam to Mara and has been in a deplorable state for close to two decades.
H. Nauth and Sons Company which has an operation on the East Bank Berbice, has been engaged in doing maintenance work on the road over the years.
