Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, said yesterday that the Granger administration is deeply concerned about the
ongoing incidents of mining pit collapses resulting in deaths.
He said that given Government’s worry in this regard, it has mandated Minister with responsibility for Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman, to convene a Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the most recent casualties.
In May, ten miners were buried alive when their pit collapsed on them at Mowasi, Potaro. And just a few days ago, Orlando Archer, 25, died in another mining pit cave-in, this time at Jumbie Creek, Potaro.
The Minister of State said, “We want to send a very clear message to all, that the lives of Guyanese are not to be taken lightly, it is not cheap and any life lost, there will be some form of inquiry into it whether it be a mining pit collapse, an accident on the road or some other manner.”
He stressed that there is a need for the life of every citizen to be treated with a very high premium, and said that Cabinet has given the COI up to July 31 to complete its work and report on the two incidents to Trotman who will then report to Cabinet.
