Police investigators on the East Coast of Demerara will rely on scientific evidence with the hope of solving the murder of 68-year-old shopkeeper Chandrowtie Basdeo, who was found dead in her home at Mahaica, one month ago.
Kaieteur News understands that investigators have taken samples from a Unity, Mahaica robbery suspect, Zahir Mohamed, which they will be matching with those taken from under the fingernails of Basdeo.
The suspect was nabbed two days ago at Mahaica following an attack on another elderly shopkeeper, and investigators have noted the similarity between the two incidents.
“The modus operandi appears to be the same and we will be making every effort to try and solve the murder,” a top police official told this newspaper.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the suspect was captured by police shortly after he had tied up the Mahaica shopkeeper and robbed her of cash and other valuables.
A source on the East Coast of Demerara said that a customer had entered the shop shortly after the suspect left and found the elderly woman lying on the ground with her hands bound and her mouth gagged.
The customer raised an alarm while freeing the woman and the police responded promptly and caught the suspect.
On the morning of May 23 last, the bound and gagged body of Chandrowtie Basdeo was discovered by her children at her home at Riverview Squatting Area, Mahaica.
During the post mortem examination of her remains, pieces of human flesh were found under her fingernails, definite signs of a fierce struggle with her killer while she was being strangled.
A police source said that a close examination of the forearms of the suspect in custody reveal several suspicious scratch marks, which they believe were caused by someone with whom he had a struggle.
“We will be doing DNA on this one to determine if there is a match,” the police official said.
He indicated that in the meanwhile, investigators will be checking out an alibi that was provided by the suspect for the period when Basdeo was killed.
“He will definitely be charged with the robbery at Unity, and in the meantime we will be working hard on the murder,” the official added.
