The body of 19-year-old Ganesh Sookcharan of Belle West, Canal No. 2 Polder, West Bank Demerara,
(WBD) has been recovered. Police yesterday confirmed that Sookcharan’s remains were found in the vicinity of the koker at Wales.
Sookcharan was one of three persons, who had been in the motor car that was subsequently found submerged in a trench at Canal No. 2, last Monday.
Reports are that Sookcharan and his friends, Premraj Bhola, 20, and Aleem Solomon, called “Pall Mall”, 19, met their demise after the motor car they occupied, skidded off the road and into a trench along the Canal No 2 Polder road.
Sookcharan, was said to be piloting the vehicle, when he reportedly lost control. It was reported that he had attempted to avoid a collision with an animal on the road.
The teenager had reportedly stolen his stepfather’s car, and took his friends for a joyride. The teen’s stepfather who described him as “a problem child,” related that the boy must have taken the car while he was asleep on Sunday night.
He explained that the car was a rental one.
The stepfather said that he had contacted the rental company and asked them to check on the GPS Tracker. “I called the rental and they checked the GPS. They told me that it stopped working at around 12:20 this (Monday) morning. That must have been right at the time the car went to the bottom of the canal.” he opined.
Residents along the Canal Polder No. 2 Public Road related that there was a loud noise at around midnight on Sunday, but no-one suspected that there was an accident.
It was not until someone said that a vehicle ran off the road…I don’t think anyone could have done anything at that time because it was so late and dark. People could not see anything,” one resident had explained.
It took hours, with the efforts of public-spirited persons and a dragline, to retrieve the badly damaged car from the canal.
The bodies of Bhola and Solomon were then taken from the front and back passenger seats of the vehicle.
Residents initially combed the area, but Sookcharan’s body could not be found.
