Dear Sir,
With the incumbent Sepp Blatter, prevailing over his rival prince Ali, enroute to his 5th Term as President, FIFA, amidst serious allegations of bribery and corruption, that has led to a clarion call for Blatter’s resignation from the powerful European Confederation, in addition to reforms pertaining to financial affairs, that have caused international investigations over a 24 years period, involving USD 150M!
While time and space will deter me from elaborating further, at this crucial juncture in the history of the world’s most emotional, passionate and lucrative sport, may, I enquire if there was a common consensus among all the stakeholders of the GFF, which candidate the GFF, was supporting? This I question unapologetically and unreservedly, since to the best of my knowledge publicly via the print media: The Normalization Committee’s Chairman, was supporting Prince Ali!
Further, was he privy to any invitation at the Jordanian’s expense, to solicit Guyana’s vote ahead of the Congress. Was this discussed with the Committee’s and General Council members prior to his departure? Was any gifts issued/ offered, as a “pledge for the vote”? With Jeffrey Webb, former President, CONCACAF publicly proclaiming that “affiliates within the region, can vote for a candidate of their choice”, surely, in some way it may have infuriated Sepp Blatter; who would indirectly be supportive of the investigation!
In the final analysis for some strange reason accountability, protocol and transparency were all sidestepped; in pursuit of a basic self-interest; which I do hope it’s not. But rather what is best suited for Guyana, with reforms from FIFA, eventually becoming an utmost priority.
How well would Guyana fare in the new dispensation as it relates to continued development, under “special projects”! What should have been championed from Guyana, via CFU/CONCACAF, is the high cost of internal travel, since some remote areas can only be accessed by aircraft.
As such meaningful development nationally remains “an illusion” to be pursued but never attained”. Is it too late for a comprehensive study to be undertaken?
Lester Sealey.
