The Central Georgetown Police Youth Group yesterday officially launched its inaugural one day Under-15 Youth Development Football Tournament, which kicks off on Sunday at the Eve Leary Sports Club Ground

Coordinator of the event, Colin Haynes, gave the details of the competition and indicated that the venture is a continued effort to forge relationships between the public and Guyana’s Police Force through the development of both youth and sports.
The competition will feature eight teams from ‘A’ Division for a top prize of $50,000, which will go toward a community development project. Trophies will accompany the monetary prizes. The second place team gets $30,000 and $20,000 for the third place team.
Haynes disclosed that Banks DIH has sponsored the first prize with the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, which is now under the umbrella of the Education of Education, sponsoring the second place award and Commander of ‘A’ Division, Clifton Hicken the third prize.
He said that there will also be prizes for the Most Valuable Player and Best Goalkeeper. Tickets will cost $200 to enter the venue. Haynes revealed that there are intentions to make the event the best developmental competition annually.
“After we were approached by the organisers about this initiative, we signed onto it knowing that it would be a good opportunity for the Guyana Police Force to foster a better relationship with all members of the community and help aid the development of the sport at the grassroots level,” the Aqua Mist Water Brand Manager at Banks DIH, Errol Nelson said.
Nelson disclosed that Banks has been involved with football extensively. He also thanked Police Youth Group for inviting Banks to be on board the project.
“Our sponsorship of this U-15 Football Tournament demonstrates our commitment to the development of football in Guyana. I know from this tournament, talented players will emerge, develop and become National footballers in the future,” Nelson added.
Sales Representative at one of the other sponsors, Colours Boutique, Tameika Ferguson said that Colours is always supportive of youth development and education.
